Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli – Sirocco over Japan!

Hayao Miyazaki, who is going to be 75 this year, is one of the most significant authors of animated films in Japan and the world. Starting in animation and then working on some of the most significant films and series in the late 1960s and 1970s, by the end of the latter decade Miyazaki developed into the author of the television series Future Boy Conan and feature film Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. However, sometime in the mid-1980s, he had turned into a much more mature author and his streak of winning feature films began with the post-apocalyptic Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and, following the founding of the Studio Ghibli, continued with the classics such as Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and, finally, The Wind Rises.
Which are the main thematic preoccupations of this award-winning author? What is his place in the cinematography of one of the world’s most famous animation studios, and who are the other significant authors at Studio Ghibli? What are the reaches of Miyazaki’s films? And, finally, how can one take stock of and interpret this master’s opus in the context of the contemporary Japanese and world moment?
This and more will be discussed during Aleksandar Žiljak’s lecture!

Born in 1963 in Zagreb, Aleksandar Žiljak, is an illustrator, one of the most prominent Croatian authors of fantastic fiction (three novels, five short story collections and a number of awards), internationally awarded editor, translator and renowned speaker on the topic of fantastic film various at conventions and festivals.
